Independent Automatic Weather Stations in the UK
This is a listing and 'clickable' map of known independently-run UK weather stations which upload weather reports automatically to a website to a frequent (more than once-daily) schedule. Please let us know of any further stations which could be added to this list. Notes:
1. We go to some trouble to keep this list current and accurate. If you copy this list or otherwise use it as a benchmark for your own compilation, we would appreciate the courtesy of an acknowledgement and a link back to this page. Copyright of the data on individual sites belongs to them and copyright of this compilation to Prodata Associates Ltd.
2. This is a listing of independently-run stations (owned by eg individuals, schools, colleges, businesses etc) of which we're aware. There are a substantial number of other, more official stations — predominantly at airfields, official Met Office weather reporting sites etc — whose observations are collated by the UK Met Office. A listing of these may be viewed at: www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/observations/
3. Please note that the sites listed vary widely in their design and sophistication. The link provided is often to an entry page to the weather data and it will often be necessary to explore further links from the entry page. Some sites may be temporarily offline or seasonal.
4. This clickable map is now generated automatically. For a variety of reasons, stations may not be plotted in their precisely accurate geographical location. But please let us know if a station's position seems grossly out.
5. A few of the sites listed are using a display that is not directly based on HTML but instead uses Flash or Silverlight technologies, which can generate very attractive and frequently-updating (every few seconds) displays of current weather data. You will need the Flash or Silverlight plug-in installed on your PC to view these sites, but most recent browsers tend to do this by default and very probably you will be able to view these sites without any changes to your PC. The initial display from these sites may take some seconds to load but subsequent updates should happen quickly and transparently.
Map Instructions: Hover over a marker to see a station name and click the marker to be taken
to the station's own website (in a new window). In areas where there are several nearby stations you will need to use the scaling
control to zoom in on the area of interest (double-clicking an unmarked area on the map will also zoom in by
one level for each double-click). You can also drag the map around within its frame to centre it on an area of interest.
NB This is a new map and listing format - please let us know if you hit any problems or have any general comments.
